Also, it brings a village on the Nile, a world completely unlike ours, convincingly to life. I did not always like the journey, but I came out a little larger at the end. I learned a lot about Sudan, and wrestled - as intended - with contradictions between African and English worlds, and with some ugly parts of human nature. But I devour lists of Greatest Novels, and the two Arabic titles I’ve seen touted most often and highly are Midaq Alley by Naguib Mahfouz, and Cities of Salt by Abdul Rahman Munif (the first book of a quartet). If you’re looking for more, here’s a list of 105 top modern Arabic Novels (though some haven’t been translated into English yet). I can’t compare Arabic novels myself I’ve only read one other. Season of Migration to the North was declared the most important Arabic novel of the 20th Century by the Damascus-based Arab Literary Academy in 2001.
